SAFEKEEPING

This program, proudly supported by Mackenzie Weegar and his family, helps keep pets safe and cared for while their families navigate difficult circumstances.

Through our Safekeeping Program, pets receive temporary care while their families face challenges such as medical emergencies, domestic violence, or housing instability. Every animal in our care is provided with a safe place to stay, daily enrichment, and compassionate care until they can be reunited with their family.

Placements are available by referral from a partner agency or professional support worker. We are unable to accept self-referrals.

While pets are staying in our care, we provide the preventive veterinary care they need, including wellness exams, vaccinations, and spay/neuter procedures. Veterinary services are available exclusively for animals enrolled in our Safekeeping Program and are not offered as a public veterinary assistance program.

How Long Can Pets Stay in the Program?

The length of a pet's stay varies depending on each family's circumstances and their progress toward reunification. When possible, extensions may be considered based on individual needs and our available capacity.

How Do I Access the Program?

Access is by professional referral only. The referral form on this page must be completed by the referring professional. All referrals are reviewed based on eligibility, capacity, and the needs of each family. Placement cannot be guaranteed.

Due to significant reductions in funding, Parachutes for Pets has had to scale back our Safekeeping Program.

At this time, we are operating at very limited capacity and are prioritizing urgent cases referred through CPS.

Unfortunately, we are not able to accept intake requests or referrals at this time.

Thank you for your understanding as we continue to do our best to support pets and the people who love them within our current capacity.

We understand how important this service is for pets and their families.

If you would like to support this program, advocating for increased government funding for services that keep pets and people together can make a meaningful impact.
